Chairman Sun, Chih-Hong, was born in 1955 in
Kaohsiung. He
graduated from Kaohsiung
High School in 1973, and at Dept. of
Geography, National Taiwan University (NTU) in 1977. He earned his master degree
at Graduate School of Geography, University of Georgia, USA
in 1982, and his Ph.D. at the same institution in 1986. Upon completing such
education, he returned to Taiwan
to serve, and was engaged as associate professor at Dept. of Geography, National Taiwan University.
Bringing GIS concept and technology with him in Taiwan, Dr. Sun held multiple GIS seminars and courses
to promote this significant technology toward relevant government agencies. In
1988, he was invited as the consultant to Council of Economic Planning and
Development (CEPD), Executive Yuan where he began to plan on the overall
framework for the National Geographic Information System (NGIS); in 1990, he led
the NGIS overall planning project and set sound foundation for NGIS promotion.
Dr. Sun was the chairman of Dept. of Geography,
National Taiwan University, and its
Graduate School as well from 1994 to 1997. He was also first President
of Taiwan Geographic Information Society from 1996 to 1997, at which post he
sponsored the Third Asian GIS Conference in 1997, by way of which he introduced
Taiwan’s GIS research results to other Asian countries.
Dr. Sun has long devoted himself to
geospatial technology and its application research. In 1992 he joined the
preparation for setting up Global Change Research Center (GCRC) at National Taiwan University,
and began his participation in global change and sustainable development
research. From 1992 to 1997 he headed the Information and Data Division, GCRC,
charged with establishing global change research database in Taiwan, and was invited to join the
establishment of international global change database. Dr. Sun was selected as
chairman of Global
Change Research
Center at NTU from 1998 to 2004, also began to
actively promote the sustainable development concept and related research and to
apply knowledge management technique in sustainable development and global
change decision support. He was invited to the Sustainable Development Research
Committee, National Science Council, as Executive Secretary from 1998 to 2001,
to join in the planning and promotion of
Taiwan’s
sustainable development research. From 1998 to 2002, as project leader of
Information Division, National Science & Technology Program for Hazard
Mitigation of National Science Council. Dr. Sun applied NGIS
results in the hazard mitigation to enhance
Taiwan’s hazard mitigation efficiency. In 2007
September, Dr. Sun was seconded from NTU to
Taiwan GIS Center
as President for purpose of promoting, in full swing, NGIS planning and
providing support for government agency decision making. In 2008 July, CEPD,
Executive Yuan approved and appointed Dr.Sun as TGIC’s Chairman, at which post
Dr. Sun will continue to assist the government in promoting NGIS tasks. Under
TGIC’s Board counseling, the Chairman will also lead TGIC toward a GIS center of
excellence in Taiwan.
